Low-maintenance: Container gardens require less maintenance compared to traditional gardens since you have greater control over the soil, water, and nutrients.
Aesthetic appeal: Container gardens add visual interest and can be a great way to incorporate your personal style into your home’s decor.

Choosing the Right Container

The first step to creating a container garden is to choose the right container. When choosing a container, consider the size, material, and drainage. The container should be big enough to accommodate the plant’s roots and have enough drainage holes to prevent water from collecting at the bottom.

Materials like ceramic, concrete, or plastic can work well for container gardens. However, it’s important to note that some materials like terra cotta can dry out the soil quickly, requiring more frequent watering.

This urn is really beautiful. A pair of these would look pretty flanking a porch or even indoors by a fireplace.

Tip: find a pot you like, but there isn’t a drainage hole? Use a masonry drill bit to gently drill a hole into material like terra cotta pot.

Selecting the Right Plants

When choosing plants for your container garden, consider the amount of sunlight, water, and soil requirements for each plant. Also, take into account the size of the container and the mature size of the plant. Mixing plants with similar requirements, such as water and sunlight, will make it easier to care for your garden.

Some great plants for container gardens include herbs like basil, parsley, and cilantro; vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce; and flowers like petunias, marigolds, and geraniums.

For a professional looking container arrangement, follow this concept of including a thriller, filler and spiller:

Thriller

A tall, eye-catching plant placed in the center or back.

Examples:

Ornamental grass
Canna lily
Purple fountain grass

Filler

Medium-sized plants that create fullness.

Examples:

Petunias ( I used a pink and white variety)
Coleus
Begonias
Salvia (I used “Grandstand Salmon’ variety in my containers)
Superbells Calibrachoa ( I used a pink variety, might be Pink Lemonade)

Spiller

Trailing plants that cascade over the edge.

Examples:

Sweet potato vine
Ivy
Lobelia
Nemesia (yellow flower I used)

This simple design technique creates balance, texture, and visual interest.

Planting Your Container Garden

Once you’ve chosen your container and plants, it’s time to plant your container garden. Start by filling the bottom of the container with a quality potting mix that’s appropriate for your plants. It’s essential to add fertilizer to the soil to provide nutrients for your plants.

Note- I like to line the bottom of a planter with weed barrier fabric to prevent all of the soil from escaping out of the drainage hole.

Place the plants in the container, leaving enough space for each plant to grow. Water the plants well after planting to ensure the soil is evenly moist.

Caring for Your Container Garden

Container gardens require regular watering, fertilizing, and pruning to keep them healthy and thriving. It’s important to monitor the soil moisture and water the plants when the soil feels dry to the touch. Fertilize the plants every two to three weeks with a balanced fertilizer.

Prune the plants as needed to maintain their shape and remove any dead or yellowing leaves.

Creating a container garden is a fun and rewarding way to add beauty and life to your home. With the right container, plants, and care, you can create a stunning container garden that will thrive throughout the growing season.
