Choosing the Perfect Rug for Your Multipurpose Guestroom Upgrade

Choosing the Perfect Rug for Your Multipurpose Guestroom Upgrade

When it comes to crafting a welcoming and functional multipurpose guestroom, one crucial element is the rug. The right rug can tie the room together, add a touch of warmth, and even enhance the versatility of the space. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential steps for Choosing the Perfect Rug for Your Multipurpose Guestroom Upgrade.

Today we are partnering with our sponsor, Boutique Rugs, to freshen up our guestroom! I had the opportunity to see a sampling of their rugs in person at a conference. They had so many pretty options on display and now I am lucky enough to have one! At the end of the post I will share my discount code you can use to shop for your very own new rug too.

Our dear old kitty cat isn’t always the most tidy member of our household. She often leaves us “presents” when her digestive tract is acting up, if you know what I mean. These “presents” are usually on one of our rugs. The guest room, which also serves as my husband’s office, and a space where the kids like to hang, is also our cat Blanca’s domain. Really, all of the house is her domain!

Anyway, during the last few months the rug in that room really took a beating from Blanca. I finally had to call it quits. I have been wanting to try a washable rug for ever. I was nervous that it would feel weird and look off. But I finally ordered one from Boutique Rugs and I am so glad that I did!

Need some tips for rug shopping? I’ll share some of mine.

Choosing the Perfect Rug for Your Multipurpose Guestroom Upgrade

1. Assess Your Space:

Know measurements of a space to ensure proper rug size

Begin your rug selection journey by assessing the dimensions and layout of your guestroom. Consider the available floor space and the placement of furniture. A larger rug can visually expand the room, while a smaller rug can create a cozy nook.

If there is a bed in the room, do you want one rug under the bed or two runners on either side of the bed?

Since I wasn’t starting from scratch, but simply replacing a rug, I already knew the size I needed. We use a 5×7 under our queen size bed. We place it at the lower part of the bed as you will see further down.

2. Determine Your Style

The rug you choose should harmonize with your guestroom’s overall style. Whether it’s modern, bohemian, minimalistic, or classic, selecting a rug that complements your existing decor is key. A well-selected rug can serve as an anchor that ties together various design elements.

Our home is a traditional 1929 Tudor Revival. We have done remodeling projects big and small to make the home look closer to the original version than the 1960s version we bought it in. The closet for instance is a IKEA hack that we made to look like it could be original to the house. For the most part I stick to a trad style and sprinkle in pieces from other styles that I love. I immediately knew I wanted a traditional rug to anchor this the room.

3. Focus on Material when Choosing the Perfect Rug for Your Multipurpose Guestroom Upgrade

Material options to consider when rug shopping

Different rug materials offer distinct textures, durability, and maintenance requirements. Whether you opt for wool, cotton, jute, or synthetic fibers, make sure it suits the foot traffic and purpose of the room.

Wool rugs provide warmth and are naturally stain-resistant, making them ideal for spaces with heavy foot traffic. Synthetic fibers offer easy maintenance and are an excellent choice for high-activity areas. Jute and cotton rugs bring a natural and casual feel to the room.

Another factor to consider is the pile of the rug. While a high pile rug can feel cozy and even luxe, a pet might see it as their personal scratch pad (ahem, feline friends I am talking mostly about you.

The rug we chose is a blend of cotton and synthetic fibers. It feels soft to the touch, but is low pile, and has the convenience of being machine washable!

4. Consider Colors and Patterns

consider colors and patterns in a room when purchasing an area rug

Rugs are a fantastic way to introduce colors and patterns to your guestroom. If your room boasts neutral hues, a vibrant rug can be a statement piece. Conversely, a patterned rug can add depth to a simple space. If your space already features patterns and textures, consider a more subdued rug to balance the visual elements.

Knowing the size and style can help narrow down your search. And of course I mentioned I wanted to try a washable rug. After filtering for this criteria, we ultimately chose the Cream Baltinglass area rug. It comes in three different colors and various sizes. I had a hard time deciding between all of the beautiful colors!

5. Think About Maintenance

consider maintenance when shopping for a new rug

For a guestroom that serves multiple functions, easy maintenance is essential. Choose a rug that is stain-resistant and easy to clean, especially if the room doubles as a workspace or play area. Consider patterned rugs that can mask stains if you have a high traffic area.

Do you have a pet that sheds? We have a white cat and her hair shows up on solid dark fabric. Think about how the rug will be used and by who.

Read the care instructions too. Some rugs have specific instructions about vacuuming or sweeping. Some rugs are professional clean only, which can be costly.

6. Maximize Functionality

In a multipurpose guestroom, your rug can help define different zones. Use it to delineate the sleeping area, reading corner, or workspace, enhancing the room’s functionality.

7. Embrace Comfort

Since guestrooms are designed to offer comfort, the rug’s softness and thickness matter. Opt for a rug that provides a plush feel underfoot, ensuring a cozy ambiance for your visitors. Just keep in mind the pet factor that I mentioned above.

Another feature of a thick rug is how it might interfere with furniture. We had a high pile rug next to my husband’s desk chair and every time he went to stand up, the chair would bump into the rug.

8. Budget Considerations

Rugs come in a wide price range. Set a budget and explore options that align with it. Remember that a well-chosen rug is an investment in the overall aesthetic and comfort of the space.

In the maintenance section I discussed rugs that require professional cleaning. Do some research to find how much a professional rug cleaner charges in your area. Dry-cleaners often offer the service through an off-site sub-contractor. The price of a professional cleaning might make you think twice. It may be best to invest in a rug you can clean yourself.

After placing the rug in the room, I added a couple items to add early Fall touches to the room. Here is what I did.

Vase with wheat for fall

Adding some wheat stems to a vase (a vintage decanter actually) is an easy way to slowly add subtle fall touches to a room.

Glass bowl of acorns for autumn

A glass bowl in an earthy hue filled with acorns is another easy way to bring autumn into your home. I set the bowl on a blue book to tie into the blues of the new rug.
