It’s been a while since I did a Valentine’s craft. The last time was making clay hearts with my son. After painting a bookcase for my daughter I got inspired to make something that can hang on the wall over the shelf. Keep reading to see my DIY Valentine’s decor.
Usually when I get inspired to do a craft I check my own supplies first then it’s off to Michael’s or a thrift store to buy anything supplemental.
I had a red spray paint in my stash but nothing else that really stood out to me.
Running errands near a thrift store one day, I popped in and found a sealed pack of cardboard cake rounds.
Looking at them I could see how I could turn them into a sign.
Gather Materials for your DIY Valentine’s Craft
What I used for this DIY Valentine’s Day Craft:
- 10 inch cake circles (or other cardboard shape)
- Cardboard box to cut out the letters for “love”
- Scissors suitable for cutting cardboard. love these versatile utility shears
- Exacto knife or other blade
- Red spray paint also available here for lower price
- Scrap fabric measuring approximately 22″ x 19″
- Stapler (not pictured)
- Velcro (not pictured) Similar here
Stenciling “LOVE”
I found letters that I like on Canva, printed them and traced them on a broken down cardboard box.
Spray Paint Your Letters
It started to rain I was spraying but I still managed to get good coverage just in time.
Make sure to spray in a well ventilated area and read instructions for temperature considerations and more.
Does spray paint look good on cardboard?
Spray paint is one of the best paints to use on cardboard. I’ve used it quite a bit for projects and was never disappointed. Just make sure to use enough coats to cover any text that might be on shipping boxes etc.
How long does it take for spray paint to dry on cardboard?
In general the spray paint will dry in 15 minutes. but definitely read the instructions on your bottle. Some paints are dry to the touch in 30 minutes, but not fully cured for 24 hours.
Wrap Fabric Around Your Cake Round
This step is very bootleg as I like to say.
I gathered the excess fabric and tied it with a rubber band. I plan to re-use this fabric and don’t want to alter it too much.
Secure Fabric to Cardboard
As I was doing the step above, I realized the fabric didn’t sit on the cardboard as smoothly as I wanted.
On the back of the circle, I stapled loose fabric down.
Secure Letters to Fabric
I am always hesitant to use glue on fabric. I worry that it will discolor, so for this project I used some velcro I had on hand.
Can you stick Velcro to fabric?
I used a peel and stick version of velcro on the cotton fabric. Read package instructions or test on extra fabric if you are unsure. Light cottons, polyester, and nylons should be compatible. Of course sewing would expand the possibilities.
Does Velcro stick to all fabrics?
Velcro with peel and stick backing should stick to lightweight cottons, nylon, polyester, poly bends.
Style Your DIY Valentine’s Decor
Have you ever seen the Love Shack Fancy home line? The prints are adorable! It is on the pricey side, but the way they style their goods is very inspiring.
With their knack of mixing prints, I opted for a similar feel and hunted for a more affordable version at a local fabric store.
The fabrics I found also reminded me of Liberty of London, another master of pattern play!
